Stuff on my kitchen bench — 06/01/2014

Stuff on my kitchen bench

Day 3 of Zero to Hero:

I came home from a Book Club gathering and the first thing that I saw when I walked in the front door was a pile of stuff, shoes, bags, recycling etc. I continued further and encountered three under-the-bed storage boxes, obviously not under any bed. I turned the corner to the kitchen / dining / lounge room and the view wasn’t much better. Papers, food, cables, books, bills, pens and all manner of stuff on every surface. Then I cast my mind back to where I’d just spent an extremely enjoyable evening.

Our hostess lives in a tiny one room apartment, she is however a master of making the most of small spaces. Even when we are all sitting on every free spot, it doesn’t feel crowded. Lots of white interspersed with brightness and no piles.

Everything in its place.

Granted, she has no children, and although I’ve heard that excuse before, I don’t think it’s a valid one. I know as many families that live perfectly neat and tidy lives as families that, like mine are in some sort of chaos.

Simply put, I have too much stuff.

Note that I’m not saying I don’t have enough room. Our home is more than sufficient for three people and a dog. No, most definitely I HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF. Please forgive me for shouting, sometimes it is the only way to get the point across.

Flylady, The Organised Housewife, Decluttter Diet. Are any of these familiar to you? All of these have graced my inbox at one point or another and all are regular contributors to my Facebook feed. Yet, still I HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF!

The idea was that I would document my daily dejunking, decluttering efforts so I could measure the progress. For a few days I did that, and then life got in the way and nothing left the house and of course I started beating myself up about yet again starting something and not seeing it through to the end.

2014 sees an attitude adjustment, I’m still trying for daily dejunking. I’m just not going to get upset with myself if things aren’t smooth sailing. As long as more stuff goes out of the house than comes in, my target will be met. Eventually. One of these days.

So now you know my story, what’s yours? Do you have too much stuff like me? Do you hang on to things because one day they might be useful? Guilty as charged. Is your wardrobe suffering from bloating? I know mine is. Actually my wardrobe is probably suffering some sort of identity crisis! I’d be honoured if you could join me as I clear out my cupboards, bookshelves, hard-drives, clouds and the kitchen bench πŸ™‚

Day 012/365 — 02/09/2013

Day 012/365

Here is the daily decluttering! Two items today, so the total is now 12. I went back and checked everything that has left the house so far and decided that it makes more sense to group like items together, i.e. two printer cartridges in one day counts as one item!

A magazine from 2010: thrown away!

Finger puppets that came as part of a promo: donated!

What a great day! The second day of autumn, and it felt like summer has definitely moved on. I left the house just as it started bucketing down. Luckily I’d decided to wear my gumboots (Hai-saappaat). I love my gumboots, they are wine-red and super comfortable. I could easily wear them all year round (except that my feet would get far too hot in summer).

Enough of my autumn fashion πŸ™‚ I had planned on getting my digital folders in order. Especially my work photos. Unfortunately a request for quote and some training got in the way. I did clean out a heap of unread messages from my in-box though. I felt a little bad, because more than half of them were blog posts that I’ll never get the chance to read in good time. I still follow the blogs, I’ll just have to get to the reader more often. (I will admit reading blog-posts from the reader doesn’t feel as nice as opening up the e-mail notice.)

I thought while I was deleting the emails that I could unsubscribe from newsletters and was disappointed that I only found one to unsubscribe from. I think I need to have stricter guidelines about what I should and shouldn’t keep.

Now I’m off to shine the sink and hopefully get some photos off the camera and into the mail for the boss! I haven’t worked out how to count the digital decluttering yet, so for now those items are gone but not counted yet!

I also need to work out which spot in the house will be the next one to get the treatment. I’m thinking the kitchen bench. It’s great when it’s completely bare, I can actually prepare lots of food and enjoy myself at the same time!!!

Day 011/365 — 01/09/2013

Day 011/365

Glittering sink!!! Naturally. We’ve been away all weekend and then we ate an early dinner out. No chance to get dirty πŸ™‚

Decluttering has stalled, although we did get rid of the recycling straight away. Last time it sat in the hallway for a couple of days…

My next project is to work out which space to work on. The kitchen bench is the best bet – makes the whole room look nicer when it’s clean.

Baby steps, baby steps!

Day 010/365 — 31/08/2013

Day 010/365

So we are away for the weekend, and that means the sink stays shiny. It will make a nice change to come home to at least ONE tidy corner…

I was going to clean out my e-mail… instead I got stuck reading the content and following links…

Decluttering total for today: nil. Running total is 15 from memory.

Tonight we have fireworks so the big challenge will be to keep the dog calm. I’ll let you know how we go!

Day 008/365 — 29/08/2013

Day 008/365

Tired and emotional. I’d like to say the day went as planned. Let’s just leave it as the day went fairly well. I had a great tour in the morning and everything went downhill from there…

Shiny sink – check! You want to know the funny thing here? Neither The Engineer or Mr. 14 have commented on this. Not once in the whole week!

Decluttering – as previous. I need to go back and check my running totals as well….
